Emotional addictions are different than substance addictions. While both drive the person to repeat destructive behaviors, the reason and method of the addiction are different.

Overeating

  • Eating when not physically hungry.
  • Awareness that eating patterns are abnormal.
  • Eating little in public, but maintaining a high body weight.
  • Failed promises and attempts to stop overeating.
  • Holding the belief that food is your only friend, or only thing that will help you.

  • Reaching for food when your emotions are intense.

Sex Addiction

Here are some symptoms of Sex Addiction to help you know if you have a problem.

  • You feel powerlessness over sexual behavior.
  • Feelings of shame, pain, and self-loathing around sex.
  • Failed promises and attempts to stop.
  • Preoccupation with sexual thoughts, acts or rituals.
  • Masturbation so frequent that it is difficult to climax or it hurts.
  • Fearing abandonment and loneliness and feeling empty or incomplete.

Love Addiction

Here are some symptoms of Love Addiction to help you know if you have a problem.

  • Constantly craving and searching for a romantic relationship.
  • When in a relationship, being desperate to please and fearful of the other’s unhappiness
  • Inability to maintain an intimate relationship once the newness and excitement have worn off
  • Finding it unbearable or emotionally difficult to be alone
  • Choosing partners who are emotionally unavailable and/or verbally or physically abusive
  • Giving up important interests, beliefs, or friendships to maximize time in the relationship or to please a romantic partner.
